HVCA Course of Study
Our Vision is for every learner to excel in faith, learning, and service, blending biblical truth
and academic achievement to honor God and bless others.
Bible
Bible class is an integral part of the curriculum across all grade levels at HVCA. The goal of Bible class is to enable students to encounter Jesus and develop a personal relationship with Him. All teaching is Bible based and allows students to become confident seekers and doers of God’s word.
Health and Physical Education
Physical education classes are part of our mind, body and spirit curriculum. All grades have time for exercise daily. We promote healthy eating and our meal options support this value. We believe healthy students are better learners. Over the years, scientific studies have shown a correlation between high standardized test scores and physical fitness scores. Furthermore, studies showed that more time spent in physical education class did not result in a decrease in academic performance.
History
Social Studies, American History and World History are included in the curriculum from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Students are challenged to not only learn about our community, nation, and world, but to engage in service at all levels of society.
Language
Reading and Writing classes are part of the core curriculum for each student at HVCA. Students receive both group and individual instruction and are given appropriate challenges for their level of mastery. Reading class allows students to progress in their word recognition, fluency, and comprehension with targeted instruction. Students learn handwriting (including cursive handwriting), spelling, phonics, vocabulary, and grammar. They also receive focused instruction in informative, persuasive, research and narrative writing.
Mathematics
Mathematics instruction is another core component for all students at HVCA. Students receive instruction at their appropriate level and are given strategies to become more confident and proficient in mathematics through the use of hands-on and real world assignments.
Music
The music curriculum develops musical appreciation, knowledge, and literacy skills. All students receive music instruction and are given the opportunity to perform at the Winter and Spring concerts. 5th-8th grade students have the opportunity to develop their musical skills at a 3 day session off-campus.
Science
The science curriculum at HVCA is engaging, rigorous, and developmentally appropriate. It nurtures children’s natural curiosity as they explore scientific principles through the lens of the Bible. STEAM experiences are encouraged in all classrooms.
Technology
The technology curriculum is intentionally designed to give students opportunities to learn about the digital world, to facilitate personalized inquiry, and to prepare for a life of service. Real world skills are explored and utilized throughout various classes. Students in 3rd-8th grade have 1:1 technology.
Visual Art
The Art curriculum draws on students’ experiences, explores their feelings, and encourages observation and research. Students learn the elements, principles, processes, and techniques of design, as well as the cultural and aesthetic values associated with specific art forms.
